Literature is an imperative aspect of a child’s educational upbringing. Not only do they improve reading and writing skills, of which a basic level understanding is uncommon, but they give children insight into the world outside of their immediate surroundings. Whether it be to explore species native to the other side of the world, or to take adventures with the protagonist, learning is infinite in the world of books.
Only 22% of students in rural Ghanaian schools pass their primary education exams, halting them from progressing to secondary education. This pushes young people into severe poverty, resulting in extreme hunger, ill health, child labour and prostitution, and high child mortality, to name a few. In providing children with the opportunity to learn and progress in education, they are more likely to receive certification that can progress their careers later on.
After receiving a fantastic donation of boxes upon boxes of books, To Live in H.O.P.E. ran into Customs charges, of which Sumillion was happy to clear so the books can continue their long journey. It wasn’t until 6 months later than they were released and could finally reach the children, who are now making the most of the reading material.
