The women of Sepaase, Ghana, are now one step closer to financial independency thanks to the volunteers who have been working consistently on constructing a building for the women to base their shops. Since our last update, painting has been completed in what Enliven Mama Africa have named ‘Sumillion Blue’, electricity has been finalised, and the front porch is well underway, already half completed. We hope that business can commence by the end of the month!
In the meantime, the women have been continuing to hone their skills in soap-making, dressmaking and hairdressing, perfecting their craft and preparing for the opening of their business. Sumillion is proud to be assisting these women in their journey to independency and economic stability. Whilst money is finite, skills are for a lifetime. In funding their education of entrepreneurial and vocational skills, they have the independency to create their own business with a long-standing effect, able to pass their knowledge onto other generations, supporting young women for years to come. We see it as investing in a sustainable future, where these communities can contribute to the Ghanian labour market.
With the lack of work in smaller Ghanian communities, the men often leave at a young age to embark on a professional journey in the cities. The only way that they can provide for their families is to leave them, sending funds when they can. This leaves women, children, and the elderly reliant on the men, unsure of when they may receive their next allowance. By helping women create their own stable economy, they can pursue their own careers and a sense of independency that they can also provide for their families. It will reduce the stress induced by uncertainty of receiving funds before running out.
Within these smaller communities, it is common that children do not finish their education, usually due to not being able to afford school, or being pulled out to work so that they can help support their families. This affects the generations to come, and the community as a whole, as they can’t afford courses on practical skills, and find it difficult to find work without qualifications. Women are then often forced to engage in other activities, like sex work, in order to afford survival. But this isn’t living, it’s surviving. With Sumillion’s support, Enliven Mama Africa are giving these women a chance to make a life for themselves and their families.
